Deerfield Valley Inn Essay Contest

WEST DOVER, VT (October 2015) – The owners of the Deerfield Valley Inn (DVI) have announced an essay contest to award full ownership, free and clear, of the inn to the winning entrant. Entrants will submit an essay on the subject: “This is my dream: To own a Vermont country inn property”. The winner may choose to continue operating it as an inn but the contest does not require it.

Is this real?

Yes, this is an Essay Contest to award the winner the business and real estate of the Deerfield Valley Inn including furniture, fixtures and fittings, mailing list, web page and telephone number. The contest is legal and has been featured on The Huffington Post, WCAX, VPR, and Irish Central among others. The Inn’s Facebook page has all the interviews online.

Do I need to be a good writer?

No. The essay should convey why you think you would be the best person to own the Inn and why you would be the right fit to be the next custodian of this great property. Just be yourself in 250 words or less and you’ll have as good a chance as anyone else.

Do I have to maintain the property as an Inn?

The Essay Contest is being run to find the next owner of the Inn. The property has been very well maintained, with a loyal following and a great reputation. So, if you’ve always wanted to run an Inn, then this is the perfect situation. But, if you win, there is no requirement to continue to operate as an Inn.

Is the building in good condition?

The property was built in 1885 by a lumber merchant and is in excellent condition. It is a 2 story wood frame building with wood siding and an asphalt shingle roof. It has operated as an inn since 1952 with only a few owners over those years. There is a high standard of workmanship and quality throughout and all mechanicals are serviced annually with high levels of maintenance and replaced as necessary. Heat is provided by an oil fired hot water system and electric baseboard. The water source is a drilled well, operating at high capacity, and the building is on municipal sewer. The entire building is sprinklered and inspected annually. A new roof and replacement windows have been installed over the past few years. The outside of the building was repainted in 2014.

How much real estate is there?

The building is approximately 5,317 square feet on approximately .36 acres of land, including the inn lot and a 30 x 60 lot across the street for overflow parking. The inn consists of 9 guest rooms, each with private bathroom, commercial kitchen, laundry room, storage room and woodshed/workshop. The owners’ quarters consists of 3 rooms, presently configured as 2 bedrooms and a living room and 2 bathrooms.
